Ellen Waldren

Integrative Psychotherapist

Ellen is an integrative psychotherapist with over 16 years of professional experience, including work within a major cancer charity and the criminal justice system. She specialises in working with anxiety, which may present as constant worry, panic attacks, overthinking, perfectionism, social anxiety, or a persistent sense of feeling overwhelmed and on edge. Many of the people Ellen works with appear high-functioning externally while feeling tense, exhausted, or stuck internally.

Her approach is grounded in the belief that anxiety is not a sign that something is “wrong,” but rather reflects how the mind and nervous system have learned to protect someone—often in ways that were once helpful but are no longer serving them. Therapy offers a space to understand these patterns and develop a more supportive relationship with oneself.

Ellen works integratively, drawing on evidence-based approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), mindfulness and somatic techniques, attachment-based work, psychodynamic insight, and compassion-focused therapy. This allows her to address both the symptoms of anxiety and the deeper patterns beneath them, including core beliefs, relational experiences, and nervous system responses.

In her work with clients, Ellen explores how anxiety shows up across thoughts, emotions, the body, and relationships. She supports clients in identifying habits anxiety can create—such as avoidance, self-criticism, or people-pleasing—and in gradually developing new, more grounding and empowering ways of responding. Somatic approaches are often part of this work, helping clients notice and regulate how anxiety is held in the body through breath, grounding, and nervous system awareness.

Her therapeutic style is warm, collaborative, and down-to-earth. Ellen aims to create a space where clients do not need to have everything figured out before beginning therapy. She works at a pace that feels right for each individual, checking in regularly and adapting the work as needs evolve.

Ellen’s goal is not to eliminate anxiety, but to help clients relate to it differently—so it no longer dominates their lives and they feel more connected to themselves, their values, and the life they want to live.

In addition to her clinical work, Ellen also provides supervision and group supervision for students and practising counsellors.

What Clients Say

★★★★★

“From the first moment I spoke to Rafael, I could tell he just 'got it' - he understood exactly what I was feeling, and what I needed - someone who would challenge my ways of thinking, guide me, direct me, and help me change very deeply held damaging behaviours and beliefs stretching back to childhood and subsequent trauma. Over the last year, he has absolutely given me the tools to achieve that, in the kindest, most compassionate way imaginable. I still have improvements to make (and perhaps always will) and am looking forward to continuing to work with him for as long as I need to support me with that.”

★★★★★

“I trust Rafael implicitly; he is professional and yet human; compassionate while able to get to the heart of difficult issues; and adapts his level of communication so that he extremely effectively helps you understand both yourself and his suggested therapeutic approach. I would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone for any issue.”

“Working with Rafael has genuinely changed my life. He's supported me through some of the hardest, darkest, and most chaotic moments I've ever faced. His patience, kindness, and professionalism have been constant even when I wasn't at my best. He's given me structure, motivation, guidance, and unwavering support when I needed it most.”

★★★★★

“I honestly don't think I'd be the person I am today and maybe I wouldn't even be here if it wasn't for Rafael and the work we've done together. Because of him, I've learned how to be accountable, authentic, and to finally believe in myself.”

★★★★★

“Today, I'm sober, grounded, confident, and genuinely excited to wake up every morning and live my life. That's something I never thought I'd say. Rafael's helped me reconnect with who I really am to care for myself, to love myself, and to build a future I'm proud of. He doesn't just do his job – he cares. You can feel it in every session, every conversation, and every bit of time he gives. The impact he's had on me goes far beyond therapy – it's been life-changing. I'm deeply grateful to have him in my corner.”

DJ, 33y Personal Trainer

“Forever grateful to Rafael! When psychotherapy was first recommended to me, I was sceptical. Even as a mental health professional, a large part of me resisted being vulnerable in therapy and exposing myself, after a series of traumatic life events. I didn't want to accept I needed help and even more challenging to put my trust so deeply in another person. It felt like a huge step. On meeting Rafael for the first time, I was struck by how intuitively he felt my predicament and I learned to soften as he put my mind at ease. Rafael showed me he could empathise with compassion whilst teaching me tools to approach my thoughts and feelings wisely. He seemed to know what I needed, the courage to build a strong foundation whilst maintaining a soft centre. He has relentless patience, trust and conviction in his approach, which gave me the confidence I needed.”
